CVC Installation - Tarmac, a name synonymous to industry since the
early 1900s is a diverse company that is also a leading supplier to the building, civil engineering,
metallurgical and chemical industries. Tarmac operate from more than 600 locations throughout
the UK and have BVC Bulk collection systems installed
in the ‘crusher and screening buildings’, at
Bayston Hill Quarry near Shrewsbury.
The problems they faced were twofold:
1. Spillage’s: - Conveyor belt spillage can be a
problem when a large volume of stone is being
processed. If left unattended, spillage can
pose a health and safety hazard to employees
working in affected areas.
2. Airborne dust: - Spillage creates airborne dust
which, when containing a significant silica
content, has environmental and health and
safety implications if left uncontrolled.
The BVC bulk collection systems are used by 5
people for several hours each day, to clean the
problem areas.
The systems are designed to handle 30mm pieces
of roadstone at a rate of 2.5 tonnes per hour and
continuously discharges collected material onto
a belt conveyor, thereby reclaiming the raw
material. Previously this was a job, done with a
shovel and wheelbarrow, which created even
more airborne dust and was an unpleasant and
time consuming task.
Quarry Manager, Kevin Dick, commented, “There
are obvious Health and Safety benefits to our
employees as well as the buildings being
noticeably cleaner, which ultimately has a positive
effect on the environment. The installation of the
system ran smoothly and it was clear BVC took
Health & Safety issues seriously”.
